VIENNA - Dominic Thiem, the former Grand Slam champion, announced on Friday that he plans to retire from professional tennis at the conclusion of the 2024 ATP Tour season. In a heartfelt message shared via Instagram, Thiem reflected on his decision to end his career in the sport he has excelled in for years.
According to Philippines News Agency, several factors influenced his decision to retire, with a persistent wrist injury being a primary concern. "There are some reasons behind it: firstly, of course, my wrist, it is not the way it should be," Thiem explained. He also mentioned that the decision had been weighing on him for a long time, influenced by his inner feelings about his career and future.
Thiem, 30, reached the peak of his career in 2020, achieving a career-high world ranking of No. 3 and securing his first Grand Slam title at the US Open. He was also a finalist at the French Open in 2018 and 2019, and at the Australian Open in 2020. However, following a series of injuries to his wrist and knee, his ranking dropped below the top 300 in 2022, affecting his performance and competitiveness on the tour.
