DOJ Begins Distribution of Survivorship Benefits to Families of Deceased Prosecutors

MANILA — The Department of Justice (DOJ) has started disbursing survivorship benefits to the families of deceased retired prosecutors, in accordance with Republic Act (RA) No. 11643. This initial phase has successfully provided benefits to 25 eligible beneficiaries.

According to Philippines News Agency, these benefits were issued in the form of checks and cover the period from January 1 to July 31, 2024. The law aims to support the surviving legitimate spouse and dependent children of former members of the National Prosecution Service (NPS) by ensuring they receive the retirement benefits the deceased prosecutor would have been entitled to.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla signed the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) on October 27, 2023, which outline the process for claiming these benefits. The IRR specifies that only the legitimate surviving spouse, dependent children, or a duly authorized legal representative can file claims.

Secretary Remulla emphasized the commitment of the Marcos administration to recognize the significant contributions of government prosecutors, acknowledging the risks and stresses associated with their roles in the criminal justice system. He highlighted the DOJ’s familial approach to its workforce, extending beyond professional ties to offer support and compensation to the families of prosecutors posthumously.

Beneficiaries are advised to file claims through the Personnel Division of the DOJ or any Regional, Provincial, or City Prosecution Office close to their residence, with the necessary documents and forms. While electronic filing is available for early assessment, official submissions must include original or certified true copies of required documents. The claims, once validated and endorsed to the Government Service Insurance System, will be processed for payment through funds released by the Department of Budget and Management.
