Post: DOJ Advocates for United Efforts in Women’s Empowerment Campaign

MANILA, Philippines — In a spirited call to action at the Philippine Information Agency's (PIA) International Women's Day celebration on March 8, Department of Justice (DOJ) Assistant Secretary Michelle Ann Lapuz underscored the critical need for a collective approach to achieving gender equality and combating violence against women and children. Lapuz emphasized that the journey towards women's empowerment requires collaborative efforts rather than viewing it as a battle between genders.

According to Philippines News Agency, her engagement with the DOJ has been driven by the ambition to foster a more gender-balanced environment, underscoring the importance of integrating women's perspectives across all societal spheres. She pointed to the Philippines' legislative framework designed to protect women and children, including the Magna Carta for Women and laws against violence and abuse, as foundations for these efforts.

The DOJ's active participation in various initiatives, such as the Interagency Council on Violence Against Women and Their Children (VAWC) and the Interagency Council against Trafficking in Persons, exemplifies its commitment to safeguarding women's rights and welfare. A pivotal step in this direction has been the establishment of a dedicated Gender and Development (GAD) and Special Protection Office within the DOJ. This office oversees a one-stop-shop for victims of violence, offering safe havens, counseling, and legal assistance.

Lapuz highlighted the importance of effective communication in reaching out to rural communities, where awareness and access to resources can be limited. While acknowledging the widespread influence of social media, she pointed out the necessity for clear, engaging messaging to inform and empower those at risk of violence.

To bolster its outreach, the DOJ intends to enhance its social media presence with visually appealing and impactful content aimed at raising awareness about violence against women and children. Lapuz invited the PIA, recognized for its extensive reach and influence, to join forces in disseminating the message of women's empowerment and protection.

"Change starts with small steps," Lapuz remarked, emphasizing that everyone has a role in cultivating a just and peaceful society. She expressed gratitude towards the PIA for its support and urged continued partnership in the shared mission to advance equality, justice, and safety for women, marking a unified stance against gender-based violence and inequality.
