DBM Releases PHP303.5 Million for New Classroom Construction Across the Philippines
Manila – Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman has approved the release of PHP303.5 million for the construction of 120 new classrooms in 21 sites nationwide, marking a significant investment in the country’s educational infrastructure.
According to Philippines News Agency, the funds are allocated under the Basic Education Facilities (BEF) Batch 2 for the 2023 calendar year. This initiative is a joint effort by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Department of Education (DepEd) to expand classroom availability across the country. The approval for the release of funds was granted following the completion of necessary requirements, including the list of schools approved by DepEd Undersecretaries for School Infrastructure and Facilities, and Finance; Budget Execution Document No. 1-Financial Plan; Physical Plan; and Monthly Disbursement Program. The total authorized appropriation for Special Provisions in the FY 2023 DepEd budget stands at P15.7 billion, which is being implemented by DPWH. This budget encompasses construction, replacement, and completion of various educational facilities, including school buildings and technical vocational laboratories.
Pangandaman emphasized the importance of strengthening the education sector, aligning with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to improve educational facilities and create a conducive learning environment for all learners, especially in remote and hard-to-reach areas. She highlighted education as a key factor in enhancing the quality of life and empowering Filipinos to achieve prosperity. The DBM statement reiterated the shared responsibility in investing in education as a crucial step towards the country’s complete economic healing and recovery.
