BOC-NAIA Intercepts Exotic Pests Concealed in Postal Item from Thailand
Pasay City, Philippines – The Bureau of Customs at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (BOC-NAIA) reported the interception of exotic pests concealed in a parcel misdeclared as candies from Thailand. The discovery was made at the sub-port of the Central Mail Exchange Center in Pasay City, highlighting the vigilance of customs officials in protecting the country’s borders.
According to Philippines News Agency, BOC Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio stated that the illegal parcel, intercepted on November 13, contained 50 concealed isopods, invertebrates belonging to the greater crustacean group. The pests were discovered following rigorous X-ray screening and a thorough physical examination of the package. The parcel was confiscated due to a lack of import clearance from the Bureau of Plant Industry, violating the Plant Quarantine law and the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.
Rubio emphasized the Bureau of Customs’ commitment to preventing smuggling and protecting the Philippines’ borders against various threats, including exotic pests. This commitment is enforced through strict border controls and ongoing reforms. A website named Weird Pets PH has been identified as selling isopods along with care kits. These creatures are known to feed on dried hardwood and leaves, fish food, vegetables, and dried fish, and can survive and breed in enclosures with soil and humidity.
