Central Visayas Health Official Stresses Continued Vigilance Against Covid-19 and Walking Pneumonia
MANILA: Dr. Eugenia Mercedes Cañal, head of the Department of Health’s Regional Epidemiological Surveillance Unit in Central Visayas (RESU-7), has called for the public’s continued adherence to health protocols in light of ongoing concerns over Covid-19 and walking pneumonia.
According to Philippines News Agency, while there have been no reported cases of walking pneumonia in Cebu or the wider Central Visayas region, it is imperative for the public to remain vigilant and take preventative measures. During the Open Line News Forum on Tuesday, she emphasized the importance of universal precautions such as regular hand-washing, avoiding touching the face, and observing proper cough etiquette by covering both the mouth and nose.
Dr. Cañal advised symptomatic individuals to continue wearing face masks to protect themselves and others from various viruses, including influenza-like illnesses. She noted that the symptoms of walking pneumonia, a condition caused by the ‘mycoplasma pneumoniae’ bacteria, are similar to those of Covid-19 and other respiratory infections.
The health official expressed confidence in the region’s medical professionals to effectively treat walking pneumonia should any cases arise. She also highlighted the ongoing efforts since December 15 to administer free vaccinations against flu, pneumonia, and human papillomavirus (HPV) in local government units as a proactive measure to prevent outbreaks.
