UAE Embassy in Manila Marks International Day for Human Fraternity with Call for Peace and Tolerance

MANILA — The Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Manila observed the International Day for Human Fraternity on Sunday, aiming to foster values such as solidarity, peace, equity, tolerance, and cultural diversity. This commemoration comes as part of a global recognition of the day, which underscores the importance of coexistence and mutual respect among different cultures and religions.

According to Philippines News Agency, the United Nations General Assembly designated February 4th as the International Day for Human Fraternity in 2020, following an initiative by the UAE. This initiative traces back to a historic meeting in Abu Dhabi on February 4, 2019, between Pope Francis and Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb, which culminated in the signing of the Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together. The UAE subsequently named that year as the ‘Year of Tolerance’.

His Excellency Mohamed Obaid Alqataam Alzaabi, UAE Ambassador to the Philippines, emphasized the day’s significance against the backdrop of global efforts for peace. Ambassador Alzaabi reflected on the need for peaceful coexistence and highlighted the UN resolution’s recognition of the positive contributions from individuals of various religions and beliefs towards humanity’s progress.

Alzaabi praised both global and local efforts to encourage inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogue, including the actions of religious leaders. He detailed the UAE’s commitment to these values over the past year, notably mentioning the inauguration of the Abrahamic Family House. This unique inter-faith complex, featuring a mosque, a church, and a synagogue, represents a tangible effort towards fostering religious harmony.

Furthermore, the Ambassador discussed the UAE Higher Committee of Human Fraternity’s launch of the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity. This award celebrates individuals and organizations that embody the legacy of Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s founder, by promoting human fraternity.

The International Day for Human Fraternity serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for tolerance, understanding, and peace in a world grappling with conflicts. Through such initiatives and commemorations, the UAE Embassy in Manila reiterates the importance of collaboration and mutual respect in achieving global peace and coexistence.
