CHR Denounces Attacks on Philippine Village Officials

Manila: The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has condemned a series of ambushes targeting village officials across the Philippines since last month, resulting in multiple fatalities. According to CHR, the attacks have claimed the lives of ten individuals in separate incidents, underscoring a disturbing trend of violence against local government representatives. The assaults include the fatal shooting of Roberto Carpio in Nueva Ecija, Lawrence Angco in Ilocos Sur, and Patricio Laude in Leyte, among others. In one notable attack, five individuals, including a barangay chair, were killed during a meeting in Leyte. These incidents have sparked concern over the safety and security of local officials, with the CHR urging a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice. The commission also highlighted the impact of such violence on the democratic process and the need for enhanced measures to protect community leaders.
