Tayabas City: 175-Meter-Long Yema Cake Celebrated at Mayohan Festival
TAYABAS CITY: The annual ‘Mayohan’ Festival in Tayabas City featured a 175-meter-long “yema” (custard caramel) cake on Wednesday, attracting both locals and tourists. The event, known as “Yemayohan 2024,” was part of the city’s tradition of celebrating a bountiful harvest and supporting the local confectionery industry.
According to Philippines News Agency, the cake was made up of 1,400 smaller cakes and was consumed by 1,700 people. The cake was prepared by Monica and Jett Bakeshop, makers of the famous Rodillas Yema Cake. The festival also featured the traditional ‘suman’ (elongated rice cake) tossing, with 11,000 pieces of suman distributed to the crowd from the historic Casa Comunidad de Tayabas. The event reflects the city’s tradition of sharing the community’s bountiful harvests.
