Cebu City Initiates Demolition of Skywalk for Bus Rapid Transit Project Construction
CEBU CITY – In a move to make room for the Cebu Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project, one of the two skywalks along Osmeña Boulevard was demolished on Friday.
According to Philippines News Agency, the demolition involved the dismantling of the beams and other components of the main structure, which consists of two separate concrete footbridges. These components will be reconstructed at the South Road Properties (SRP).
The operation was temporarily closed to traffic to facilitate the works. Guardo, along with engineers from Hunan Road and Bridges Construction, oversaw both the demolition at the original site and the planned reconstruction at SRP. To accommodate the construction activities, traffic was rerouted: the stretch from Fuente Osmeña to Arlington Pond Street was closed to vehicles, while those traveling from B. Rodriguez to Colon Street were directed through Ramos Street.
Engineer Jomar Doque, the focal person for the BRT Phase 1 project, provided details on the timeline of the demolition activities. The process of tearing down the two skywalks is expected to last 18 days, with a commitment to clear the first skywalk by February 18. Doque also mentioned that the second skywalk, located near the Cebu Normal University, will undergo a similar dismantling process, with its main structure set to be repurposed at the SRP area.
