Cebu Archbishop Opposes Divorce Legislation, Citing Harm to Children and National Values

CEBU CITY – Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma has voiced strong opposition to the proposed absolute divorce bill in the Philippines, arguing that it would cause significant harm to children and undermine national values. The Roman Catholic Church in Cebu is actively rallying support against the bill’s passage, emphasizing the potential negative impacts on society.

According to Archbishop Palma, who oversees an archdiocese of 4.8 million Catholics, divorce is not a solution for broken marriages and could instead exacerbate issues, particularly affecting children. In a letter released Monday, Palma urged the faithful in Cebu to stand together against the divorce bill, which he believes would erode the permanent nature of marriage. “I appeal to all the faithful of the Archdiocese of Cebu to join hands in our effort to make it known that we do not accept divorce due to the damage it will inflict, not only on us Catholics, but on our values as a nation,” stated Palma.

The Archbishop’s letter has been publicized widely, with excerpts printed on tarpaulins displayed at Roman Catholic churches across the province. He emphasized that existing measures like the declaration of nullity are sufficient to address troubled marriages without the need for divorce legislation. The prelate highlighted various studies indicating that children suffer the most in divorces, countering arguments that divorce would be harmless.

Currently, the Philippines remains the only country outside the Vatican where divorce is not legally recognized. While the House of Representatives has passed the divorce bill, it is still under consideration in the Senate.
