Caritas Manila Launches Telethon to Fund Scholarships for Underprivileged Students
QUEZON CITY — Caritas Manila, the social action arm of the Archdiocese of Manila, has announced a telethon to support scholarships for economically disadvantaged students through its Youth Servant Leadership and Education Program (YSLEP).
According to Philippines News Agency, executive director of Caritas Manila, the telethon will take place on July 15 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. over the 846 AM station. During an interview with Church-run Radio Veritas on Saturday, Pascual highlighted that the theme of this year’s YSLEP telethon is ‘Empowering Youth Servant Leaders: Guided by Service, Inspired by Purpose.’ The event aims to fund the education of the program’s scholars and foster their growth as servant leaders committed to serving their communities.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to support over 5,000 current YSLEP scholars across the country, including both Muslim and Christian students. In the 2023-2024 school year, the program celebrated the graduation of 1,270 students, indicating the significant impact of the support provided.
Fr. Pascual emphasized the importance of community and corporate involvement in addressing educational inequities. “Investing in a brighter future by empowering the youth of today as servant leaders involves guiding them to lead by serving others, with a strong sense of purpose and dedication to their community,” said Pascual, who also serves as the president of Radio Veritas. He stressed that a collective effort is essential for building a more inclusive society where even the poorest can thrive and contribute meaningfully.
YSLEP not only provides financial assistance for education but also integrates academic support with leadership and values formation, aiming to empower its beneficiaries and reinforce their education with Christian values.
