Pope Francis Calls for Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza Amid Escalating Violence
In Rome, Pope Francis has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, citing escalating violence and a worsening humanitarian situation.
According to Philippines News Agency, who spoke to a crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square during his Sunday Angelus, “War is always a defeat.” He also urged for the release of all hostages held by Hamas and encouraged the world to pray for the resolution of the crisis in Gaza.
Since October 7, Israel has conducted heavy bombardments on Gaza following a cross-border attack by the Palestinian group Hamas that resulted in 1,400 deaths and numerous hostages. The Health Ministry reports that the number of Palestinians killed has risen to 8,005, which includes 3,342 children, 2,062 women, and 460 elderly individuals. In a recent announcement, Israeli army spokesperson Daniel Hagari stated plans for “expanding its operations,” moving to the “next phase of our war against Hamas,” which involves ground operations.
The humanitarian condition in Gaza continues to deteriorate as its 2.3 million residents face shortages in essentials like food, water, fuel, and medicine, attributed to Israel’s blockade of the enclave.
