Brunei Minister of Health Highlights Cardiovascular Disease Concerns in World Heart Day Message
Bandar seri begawan: Cardiovascular diseases, including heart disease and stroke, continue to be the leading causes of death globally, with Brunei Darussalam experiencing significant impacts. In 2024, Brunei reported 572 deaths from cardiovascular disease, including 313 premature deaths, marking a 5 percent increase from the previous year. The Minister of Health, in his message for World Heart Day 2025, highlighted the potential consequences of these trends, including decreased life expectancy, loss of family income, pressure on social services, and impacts on work productivity and the national economy.
According to Radio Television Brunei, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar emphasized the importance of regular health check-ups, adopting a healthy lifestyle, and recognizing the symptoms of heart disease. He urged individuals to consume a healthy diet, engage in physical activity, and get adequate rest to mitigate the risks associated with cardiovascular disease.
Yang Berhormat reiterated the Ministry of Health’s commitment to strengthening cardiovascular disease prevention strategies. This includes setting clear targets to reduce premature deaths, ensuring accessible and quality healthcare services, and establishing One-Stop Warfarin Clinic Services. The Minister also highlighted the integration of digital technology and health promotions into the BruHealth application to improve monitoring and management of cardiovascular health.
Additionally, the Minister introduced the BN on The Move Championship Campaign to encourage increased physical activity among the public. The campaign includes a new component that monitors health routines and uses an incentive points system to promote healthy behaviors. The Health Index is another initiative to help the public assess their health status and detect diseases early.
