Brunei Darussalam’s Commitment to Gender Equality in ICT Sector Highlighted

Bandar Seri Begawan: Brunei Darussalam’s policy of providing universal access to education has significantly contributed to increasing opportunities for women and girls in the ICT sector. In 2024, women represent approximately 34 percent of the ICT workforce across various sectors, marking a 4 percent rise since 2020. This information was shared by the Minister of Transport and Infocommunications during the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.

According to Radio Television Brunei, Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha emphasized the growing involvement of women in the digital economy, noting their roles as innovators, entrepreneurs, technologists, and policymakers. The Minister highlighted the potential of ICT to empower societal participation in economic and social development, especially for women and girls. However, challenges such as language and literacy gaps, financial limitations, and the under-representation of women in STEM fields remain obstacles.

To address these challenges, AITI has initiated efforts to promote digital inclusion and gender empowerment through various programs. One of these initiatives, ‘Digital for All’, is a national program designed to equip communities with necessary digital skills, thereby bridging the skills gap and enhancing digital confidence among citizens. This initiative aims to ensure inclusive participation in the country’s digital transformation.

The theme for this year’s World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is “Gender Equality in Digital Transformation.” It encourages collective efforts to create a digital future that is inclusive and equitable for everyone.
