Brunei and Laos Strengthen Strategic Partnership in Bilateral Meeting

Kuala lumpur: His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam attended a bilateral meeting with His Excellency Sonexay Siphandone, Prime Minister of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, at the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur. Accompanying His Majesty was His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen.

According to Radio Television Brunei, the meeting focused on the strategic partnership between the two nations, particularly in education, defence, and people-to-people linkages. This includes the Brunei Government scholarship for Laotian students announced in 2023 and the participation of Laos in English language courses conducted by Brunei’s defence officials.

His Majesty also welcomed Lao PDR’s interest in enhancing trade linkages, notably in rice importation and agricultural collaborations between private sectors. His Majesty expressed pleasure in receiving the Foreign Minister of Lao PDR, His Excellency Thongsavanh Phomvihane, in Brunei recently and extended an invitation for the Prime Minister to visit Brunei at mutually convenient dates. The leaders exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual interest, underscoring the strong and friendly relations between Brunei and Lao PDR, which have been elevated to a strategic partnership in 2023.

The two countries continue to cooperate extensively in various fields, including economic affairs, human resource development, and defence.
