Bacolod City Advances Sister City Agreement with Australia’s Darwin City
Bacolod City, Philippines – Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez revealed on Monday that Bacolod City is in the process of finalizing a sister city agreement with Darwin City in Australia’s Northern Territory. This partnership is expected to open avenues for collaboration in various sectors, including education, technology, and culture.
According to Philippines News Agency, the proposed sister city agreement is currently under review by the City Council. The announcement was made following his meeting with Dr. Moya Collett, the Australian Embassy’s deputy head of mission, who is on a two-day visit to Bacolod City. The visit’s agenda includes exploring trade and investment opportunities and cultural exchanges. Benitez, along with Councilors Vladimir Gonzales, Jason Villarosa, Claudio Jesus Puentevella, Simplicia Distrito, and Celia Flor, discussed potential collaborations with Collett.
The mayor highlighted that the initial focus of the collaboration with Darwin City would be in the areas of education, technology, and culture. He also noted the Australian Embassy’s interest in increasing investments and visits to Bacolod. The proximity of the Philippines to Australia, despite not reflecting in the volume of investments, presents significant opportunities for both regions. Benitez also mentioned the potential for agricultural collaborations, despite Bacolod not being primarily an agricultural area, by involving neighboring local government units engaged in agriculture.
The cultural appeal of Bacolod, exemplified by the MassKara Festival, was also a topic of discussion, with Collett expressing admiration for the festival dancers. Benitez shared that Bacolod has received several international invitations for its MassKara dancers, showcasing the city’s cultural vibrancy.
