ABRA — In a notable development from Pilar, Abra, community members have actively contributed to the counterinsurgency campaign by providing crucial information to the military regarding the whereabouts of New People's Army (NPA) insurgents. This cooperation facilitated a significant military operation on Tuesday, underscoring a shift in local attitudes toward the insurgent group.

According to Philippines News Agency, Chief of Civil Military Operations for the 501st Infantry Brigade, the local populace's detailed reports on the NPA's location in Nagcanasan village were instrumental in the success of the recent operation. In an engagement that unfolded over eight hours starting Tuesday morning, the military clashed with NPA members, marking a determined effort to combat insurgency in the region.

The operation, while focused on eliminating threats, also prioritized humanitarian concerns, with military personnel meticulously searching the area for any abandoned landmines and potential injured insurgents requiring medical aid. During the conflict, Corporal Markson Tadeo from Pilar sustained minor injuries but remains in stable condition.

In response to the clash, which occurred near the boundary with Ilocos Sur, local authorities initiated precautionary measures, including evacuating residents of the adjacent areas. Furthermore, Pilar's Mayor Tyrone Beroña issued a directive to suspend educational activities, affecting all primary and secondary schools in the municipality to ensure student safety amid ongoing military activities.
