Tabuk City Advocates Upcycling to Combat Dengue and Boost Economy

Tabuk City, Kalinga — The city’s health services have recognized the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for its role in mitigating health risks through support of local upcycling initiatives. During the 23rd Matagoan Festival, officials discussed how these efforts not only tackle waste-related health risks but also bolster the local economy.

According to Philippines News Agency, Nurse IV at the Health Promotion and Communication Services Office, the DTI’s involvement has been pivotal in supporting enterprises like Parways Handicrafts. The business, initiated by the late visual artist Heremias Paragas, turns discarded materials into valuable products, helping to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds found in items like old tires while providing employment opportunities in the community.

The Department of Health has long cautioned against the improper disposal of tires, which are prime breeding sites for mosquitoes, agents of dengue fever. Tabuk City has recorded 66 dengue cases from the beginning of the year to June 20, 2024, a figure that remains within acceptable epidemiological thresholds, yet underscores the ongoing need for effective waste management strategies.

Further enhancing local business capabilities, DTI-Kalinga’s provincial director Renie Ramos highlighted the support offered to micro, small, and medium enterprises, including business operation assistance, permitting guidance, and market linkage, all of which aim to elevate local businesses and sustain the economy.
