US Coast Guard Strengthens Indo-Pacific Maritime Security with Philippine Partnership

MANILA – The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is set to bolster the maritime capabilities of the Philippines and other Indo-Pacific nations to counter illegal sea activities, demonstrating a commitment to upholding a rules-based international order in maritime operations.

According to Philippines News Agency, the cooperation is aimed at enhancing the maritime law enforcement and sovereignty protection capacities of partner states in the region. This initiative aligns with international norms and legal frameworks governing maritime conduct and seeks to ensure the Indo-Pacific waters remain open and secure from illicit activities.

In a significant move towards this goal, the USCGC Frederick Hatch (WPC 1143) made a landmark visit to Tacloban in October last year, marking a historic first in the direct engagement between the US Coast Guard and its Philippine counterparts. Discussions during this visit focused on mutual capabilities, training opportunities, and community engagement, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in maintaining regional maritime security.

The visit also included a subject matter expert exchange on maritime law enforcement with the Philippine Coast Guard, reinforcing the USCG’s commitment to supporting the Philippines in safeguarding its maritime domains against illegal encroachments and activities. This partnership underscores the strategic cooperation between the United States and the Philippines and their shared dedication to a secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
