Two NPA Rebels Surrender in General Nakar, Quezon
GENERAL NAKAR, Philippines – Two members of the New People’s Army (NPA) operating in the forested areas around General Nakar, Quezon, have surrendered to authorities, abandoning their armed struggle. The surrender took place in Barangay Umiray on Saturday, as announced by Brig. Gen. Cerilo Balauro Jr., commander of the Philippine Army’s 202 Brigade, and General Nakar Mayor Eliseo Ruzol on Monday.
According to Philippines News Agency, the rebels also turned over a cache of firearms to the authorities. Brig. Gen. Balauro highlighted the surrender as a result of the collaborative efforts among village officials, the local government of General Nakar, the Philippine National Police, and the Armed Forces of the Philippines to maintain peace and order in the region.
The surrendered individuals, whose names were not disclosed, will be temporarily housed in an undisclosed halfway house for their protection against potential retaliation from former comrades. They will also be provided security measures.
Mayor Ruzol emphasized the local government’s commitment to addressing the root causes of the insurgency, including social inequities that may drive individuals to join the NPA. Plans include deploying municipal departments to every barangay to offer services such as free birth certificates, free medical and dental care, distribution of crop seeds, and solutions to real property tax issues.
Lt. Col. Noel Wamil, commander of the 1st Infantry Battalion, urged the community not to be swayed into joining the NPA, citing the serious legal consequences and risks to life associated with rebellion. He assured the residents of Barangay Umiray that government forces would continue to patrol the area to protect the community from those who seek to disrupt peace through violence.
