Speaker Romualdez Advocates SSS Membership for Barangay Officials
PASAY CITY – Speaker Martin Romualdez has committed to ensuring that barangay officials receive social security coverage under the Social Security System (SSS), a move that would provide them with life insurance and potential lifetime pensions.
According to Philippines News Agency, Romualdez revealed his recent discussions with SSS President and CEO Rolando Macasaet about integrating barangay officials into the pension fund. “I am hoping that all of you would become members of the SSS at the soonest possible time. Once this happens, you would automatically be given life insurance and as you gradually save up for the SSS fund, you could also qualify for a lifetime pension,” Romualdez said.
Further, Romualdez announced that the House of Representatives is considering a legislative measure that would require local government units to allocate funds for the monthly SSS premium contributions of barangay officials. This initiative aims to relieve these officials from the burden of managing their own monthly contributions.
Additionally, Romualdez proposed extending the term of office for barangay officials to six years to enable more effective planning and implementation of long-term community projects. “Within the period of six years, you won’t be bothered by electoral issues, allowing you to devote all of your attention to serving your constituents. We will be able to create solid leadership in the barangay and ensure that the projects and programs are sustainable,” he explained.
The Speaker also mentioned ongoing efforts to pass the proposed Magna Carta for Barangays, which aims to enhance the compensation and benefits for barangay workers. He emphasized the critical role of barangay officials in connecting their communities with the national government and ensuring the delivery of public services across the Philippines.
