Sagada’s Tourism Bounces Back Post-Pandemic
Baguio, Philippines – Sagada, a popular tourist destination in the Mountain Province, is experiencing a resurgence in tourism arrivals, signaling recovery from pandemic-induced losses. Improved public transportation, enhanced facilities, and diversified food options have contributed to this upswing.
According to Philippines New Agency, the region saw a significant increase in tourist numbers. From January 1 to November 30, 2023, Sagada welcomed 108,059 tourists, a substantial rise from the 48,761 recorded in the entire year of 2022. These figures are approaching the pre-pandemic levels of 2019 when the tourist arrivals reached 144,000.
Langbayan, in a phone interview, expressed optimism about Sagada’s tourism prospects. She highlighted the continuous efforts by tourism stakeholders to improve visitor experience, including the use of ‘tuk-tuk’ tricycles as public transportation. This initiative encourages tourists to leave their vehicles at hotels, reducing traffic congestion.
Additionally, specific roads have been designated as parking areas to prevent clogging the town’s two-lane roads. Improvements have also been made in hotel facilities and food quality to meet health and safety standards and keep up with evolving tourism standards.
Langbayan noted that the influx of tourists during the holiday season was a positive indicator of Sagada’s appeal, known for its chilly weather and scenic landscapes, attracting both local and foreign visitors.
