PTFoMS to Host Welcome Dinner for UN Special Rapporteur Irene Khan in Manila
MANILA- The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) is set to host a welcome dinner for United Nations Special Rapporteur (UNSR) on freedom of opinion and expression, Irene Khan. This event, aimed at fostering dialogue and idea exchange, underscores the Philippines’ commitment to a free and open media environment.
According to the Philippines News Agency, the dinner will be attended by leaders and representatives from various government agencies and the media sector. The event is seen as an important opportunity for open dialogue, enhancing the Philippines’ commitment to a dynamic media landscape and freedom of expression. The PTFoMS will be joined by members from the Publishers Association of the Philippines, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation, and the Office of the National Security Adviser, with Secretary Eduardo Año in attendance.
Irene Khan is scheduled to visit the Philippines from January 23 to February 2, focusing on the rights to freedom of expression in the country. During her visit, Khan plans to meet with civil society groups, human rights organizations, media entities, experts, academics, and other relevant stakeholders. These interactions aim to gather insights on the state of media freedom, internet freedom, and freedom of expression within the national framework.
The PTFoMS has expressed its full preparedness for Khan’s visit, viewing it as a chance to demonstrate the nation’s commitment to openness, transparency, and a robust media community. Responding to Khan’s specific requests, the PTFoMS has arranged numerous meetings with key institutions, aligning with her mandate and objectives. PTFoMS Executive Director Undersecretary Paul Gutierrez has worked closely with partner agencies to fulfill Khan’s requests for meetings with selected state institutions and government bodies.
As the primary coordinator for Khan’s visit, the PTFoMS has organized several meetings in different regions, including Baguio City, Cebu, and Tacloban, to ensure a comprehensive representation of diverse Filipino voices. Khan will engage with various agencies, including the Departments of Justice and Local Government, the Philippine Human Rights Committee, the Anti-Terrorism Council Program Management Center, the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict, the Supreme Court, the House of Representatives, and the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples.
Undersecretary Gutierrez has expressed optimism that Khan’s visit will bolster the Philippines’ reputation as a staunch advocate for human rights, freedom of expression, and adherence to international humanitarian laws. He emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to creating an environment where everyone can express their opinions freely and without fear.
