President Marcos Unveils New Phase in Pasig River Revitalization Effort

MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., along with First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, officially opened Phase 1C of the Pasig River Urban Development Showcase Area at Plaza Mexico, Magallanes Drive in Intramuros, Manila on Sunday. This event marks a significant milestone in the administration’s ongoing project, ‘Pasig Bigyang Buhay Muli’, aimed at transforming the Pasig River into a key destination for recreation and tourism.

According to Philippines News Agency, the newly inaugurated Phase 1C features a one-story structure with a roof deck along the Pasig River, incorporating a three-meter-wide walkway and ground-level commercial spaces available for lease. Above, the roof deck offers a combined walkway, bike lane, and viewing area. This phase includes more than 30 commercial stalls, each equipped with modern facilities such as sewage treatment systems, individual electric and water meters, fire protection, and public restrooms. The design emphasizes sustainability, utilizing renewable energy sources and supporting ecological practices in line with the government’s environmental conservation efforts.

During the inauguration, President Marcos expressed his vision for the Pasig River, aspiring for it to be recognized among the world’s most renowned recreational waterways. He drew comparisons to famous rivers like the Seine in Paris and the Thames in London, illustrating his goal for the Pasig River to mirror these iconic locations in beauty and functionality.

“Bringing the Pasig River back to life mirrors our ongoing journey towards a brighter future for our country. How well we do here will reflect our efforts in other areas of the country and how successful we are at improving and leaving the country a better place than we found it,” said Marcos. He emphasized that the rejuvenation of the Pasig River exemplifies the resilience and cooperative spirit of the Filipino people.

Phase 1C follows the successful launch of earlier phases of the project this year. The President underscored the commitment of both himself and the First Lady to the project’s completion within the next three years. He expressed gratitude to all parties involved, including the Inter-Agency Council and the local government of Manila, and urged project implementers and stakeholders to maintain the cleanliness, beauty, and security of the new esplanade.

Marcos also called upon the public to support and participate in the efforts to restore the historical and cultural significance of the Pasig River.
