President Marcos Praises Swedish Ambassador for Strengthening PH-Sweden Relations
MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. recently lauded the outgoing Swedish Ambassador to the Philippines, Annika Thunborg, for her instrumental role in enhancing the bilateral relations between the Philippines and Sweden. The commendation came during Thunborg’s farewell visit to Malacañan Palace.
According to Philippines News Agency, Ambassador Thunborg has been pivotal in bringing the two nations closer, particularly in addressing various challenges faced by the Philippines. He emphasized the importance of forming alliances with countries like Sweden, which he described as a friend and ally in addressing global and regional issues.
Ambassador Thunborg, who has served since 2021, highlighted the significance of building strong partnerships with like-minded nations, expressing satisfaction with the progress in relations during her tenure. She noted the growing partnership’s importance, especially given the current global context, which demands robust international cooperation.
The farewell event was attended by key Philippine officials, including Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs Frederick Go, Deputy Assistant Secretary Lenna Eilleen De Dios-Sison, and Director Ferdinand Flores of the Department of Foreign Affairs Office of European Affairs.
Thunborg’s tenure in the Philippines marks her second ambassadorial role since the Swedish Embassy in Manila was reopened in 2016. Her diplomatic career includes significant postings in Mexico, Geneva, Vienna, and New York, where she developed strong professional relationships with her Filipino counterparts.
The Philippines and Sweden have enjoyed diplomatic relations since January 17, 1947, with continued efforts from both sides to strengthen their ties through various diplomatic, economic, and cultural exchanges.
