Pimentel Calls for Protection of Healthcare Workers After Sultan Kudarat Ambush

SULTAN KUDARAT – Senate Minority Leader Aquilino ‘Koko’ Pimentel has called for increased protection for doctors and healthcare workers, especially those serving in remote and conflict-affected areas, following an ambush on a physician in Sultan Kudarat. The incident, which critically injured Dr. Charmaine Ceballos Barroquillo, a government doctor at the Sultan Kudarat Provincial Hospital, has sparked outrage and concern for the safety of medical professionals.

According to Philippines News Agency, the attack, which occurred on February 3 in a secluded area of Maguindanao Del Sur, underscores the urgent need for measures to ensure the security of healthcare providers. In a statement released on Monday, Pimentel strongly condemned the violence against Dr. Barroquillo, emphasizing the nation’s responsibility to safeguard those committed to saving lives.

Pimentel highlighted the significant investment in education and training that doctors like Dr. Barroquillo have made, as well as the investment by the Philippine state in their development. He stressed the importance of protecting these valuable members of society, who play a crucial role in enhancing public health and welfare.

The senator’s call to action includes urging law enforcement agencies to swiftly bring the assailants to justice and to implement strategies to protect healthcare workers from similar acts of violence. Pimentel’s statements reflect growing concerns over the safety of healthcare professionals in certain regions of the Philippines, where security issues and armed conflicts pose constant threats.

Pimentel’s plea for the prioritization of healthcare workers’ safety aims to put an end to the senseless violence against them and to ensure they can continue their vital work without fear of harm.
