Philippines Collaborates with UN Special Rapporteur Irene Khan on Justice and Freedom of Expression
MANILA: The Philippine Department of Justice (DOJ) has expressed its eagerness to collaborate with Irene Khan, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of the Right to Freedom of Opinion and Expression, who recently arrived in the country. This partnership is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its justice system and uphold freedom of expression and the rule of law.
According to Philippines News Agency, during the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon briefing on Tuesday, Khan’s visit includes meetings with the DOJ. These discussions will focus on the steps taken by the Philippine government to enhance the justice system, freedom of expression, and the rule of law. Khan’s stay in the Philippines is scheduled until February 2, during which she is expected to meet with members of the fourth estate.
Gutierrez noted that Khan is the third United Nations Special Rapporteur to visit the Philippines under the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Prior to her, UN Special Rapporteur on the Sale and Sexual Exploitation of Children, Mama Fatima Singhateh, visited the country from November 28 to December 8, 2022. Singhateh’s visit was aimed at assessing the situation and progress made in combating and preventing the sale and sexual exploitation of children, in line with international human rights norms and standards.
Additionally, Dr. Ian Fry, the Special Rapporteur for Climate Change and Human Rights, also visited the Philippines in November 2023. These visits underscore the Philippines’ commitment to engaging with the international community on critical issues related to human rights and social justice.
