Philippines’ Bureau of Customs Thwarts Major Fuel Smuggling Operation in Bataan

Manila: In a significant crackdown, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) successfully intercepted an attempt to smuggle approximately 146,000 liters of unmarked fuel in Mariveles, Bataan. The operation, which took place on Saturday, involved seizing a motorized tanker used for transporting the illicit fuel.

According to Philippines News Agency, the intercepted fuel and 16 lorry trucks have an estimated combined value of PHP 88 million, while the impounded vessel is valued at PHP 60 million. BOC-CIIS Director Verne Enciso provided these figures in the aftermath of the operation. The successful interception was a result of a collaborative effort between the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service at the Manila International Container Port and the National Bureau of Investigation – Anti-Organized and Transnational Crime Division, following an intelligence tip.

Customs Commissioner Bien Rubio highlighted the challenges of the operation, noting that it took place in a private port without the presence of BOC personnel. The critical information received played a pivotal role in the operation’s success. Rubio’s statement emphasized the importance of intelligence in combating smuggling activities and ensuring the enforcement of customs laws to protect national interests.
