Philippines Allows Lighter Uniforms for Emergency Services Amid Heat Wave

QUEZON CITY - In response to the ongoing heat wave intensified by the El Niño phenomenon, police, fire, and jail officers in the Philippines have been granted permission to wear lighter uniforms to help cope with the extreme temperatures. Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) announced the issuance of an urgent memorandum during the Saturday News Forum.

According to Philippines News Agency, the directive applies to the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP). The move aims to alleviate discomfort and reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke, cramps, and exhaustion among officers. "Dahil nga mainit, dangerous heat and index levels are quite high across the country, you are hereby directed to issue an urgent advisory for all PNP, BJMP, and BFP personnel to wear light uniforms in the performance of their respective duties," Abalos stated, addressing the need to ensure the well-being of frontline personnel.

Earlier in the day, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported dangerous heat index levels, which combine air temperature and relative humidity, reaching between 42 to 48 degrees Celsius in 44 areas. In light of these conditions, PAGASA has advised the public to limit outdoor activities, especially around noon, to stay hydrated, and to use protective gear such as umbrellas, hats, and sleeved clothing when outside.
