Philippines Advocates for UNSC Reform to Address Veto Power Issues
NEW YORK CITY – In a move towards enhancing global crisis response, the Philippine government has called for reforms in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), particularly addressing the limitations imposed by the current veto power system. This stance was presented by Philippine Permanent Representative to the UN Antonio Lagdameo during the UN General Assembly’s plenary debate in New York City on November 16.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Security Council’s existing structure, especially the veto power held by its permanent members, often impedes prompt action during crises, as evidenced in recent situations like the conflicts in Myanmar (2021), Russia-Ukraine (2022).
