Residents in the country will have the opportunity to witness a rare Partial Solar Eclipse this Sunday, 21st of June 2020. The astronomy event is expected to start at 10 past 3 in the afternoon and ends at 5.23 in the afternoon.
According to Awang Hazarry bin Haji Ali Ahmad, Secretary General of the Brunei Darussalam Astronomy Association, the partial solar eclipse phenomenon will occur for 2 hours 13 minutes whereby during the occurrence, the moon will cover a small part of the sun. At the peak of the eclipse, which is at 4.22 in the afternoon, almost 28 percent of the sun will be covered by the moon. The Brunei Darussalam Astronomy Association will hold an online observation of the solar eclipse on Sunday 21st of June from 2.45 to 5.30 in the afternoon. The public wishing to follow the broadcast can do so by going to the association’s social media at Facebook bruneiastronomy. It is also advised that members of the public wishing to observe the eclipse must take the necessary precautions such as NOT looking directly at the sun and to use safe methods for example, using special glasses or solar filters as well telescope projections.
Meanwhile, the Brunei Darussalam Astronomy Association, PABD, in collaboration with Universiti Brunei Darussalam, UBD; Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University, UNISSA and Seri Begawan Religious Teachers University College, KUPU SB will hold a discussion on the phenomenon entitled “Bincang Santai Astronomi: Fenomena Gerhana Matahari” through Facebook Live. The discussion will be broadcast this friday at 8.30 in the evening.
Meanwhile, the solar eclipse observation will be broadcast live online on the 21st of June 2020 by PABD from a number of selected locations nationwide.
The public can follow the observation’s live streaming from 2.45 until 5.30 in the afternoon. The observation is dependent on the weather condition and all activities held can be followed through www.facebook.com/bruneiastronomy.
