NPA Rebel Surrenders in Negros Oriental, Rifle Grenade and IED Components Recovered
Mabinay, Negros Oriental, Philippines – In a significant development, a member of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) surrendered to police authorities in the town of Mabinay, Negros Oriental, handing over a rifle grenade.
According to Philippines News Agency, the individual, identified only as ‘Dodong’, a resident of Sitio Talinting, Barangay Luyang in Mabinay, was a sub-leader of the Barrio Liaison Group within the NPA’s Central Negros 2 Guerrilla Front. Dodong’s surrender took place around 9:30 p.m. on Monday to a composite team consisting of the 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company, the 704th Mobile Company of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 7, and local town police.
In a related incident on the same day, the Guihulngan City police recovered components for an improvised explosive device (IED) while attempting to serve a warrant of arrest against another suspected NPA member. The NOPPO spokesperson, Lt. Stephen Polinar, identified the suspect as ‘Rayray’, who is charged with violations of Republic Act 7610, or the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation, and Discrimination Act.
The suspect, Rayray, was not present when police arrived at his residence in Sitio Tuko, Barangay Trinidad. However, officers discovered the IED components in plain view, which included 15 meters of wire, four 9-volt batteries, and various metal nails used as shrapnels.
These incidents underscore the ongoing efforts of local authorities in addressing insurgency and maintaining security in the region.
