Northern Mindanao Police Warns of Cyberattack Risks on Government Offices
CAGAYAN DE ORO, NORTHERN MINDANAO – The chief of the Northern Mindanao Police Regional Anti-Cybersecurity Unit (RACU-10) has issued a warning about the heightened vulnerability of personnel and government offices to cyberattacks.
According to Philippines News Agency, the risk of cyberattacks is a significant concern, especially for those using internet-connected gadgets and devices. During a statement released on Monday, Gonda emphasized the importance of caution, advising individuals to “think before you click.” He highlighted that even members of the banking and financial sectors, who are frequently reminded about cybersecurity, have fallen victim to online financial fraud. “They are frequently reminded about cybersecurity, how much more ordinary people and those in government offices?” he questioned.
Gonda pointed out that “black hat” hackers, utilizing ransomware and malware, pose a serious threat as they can access sensitive information of online users, including details of banking and financial transactions. He noted that one common technique employed by these hackers is “social engineering,” where victims are deceived into divulging sensitive information.
The warning also extends to the use of public amenities like free Wi-Fi and charging stations, which are also susceptible to cyberattacks. Gonda cautioned that hackers are persistent and can replicate a wide range of personal details, including names, addresses, and contacts. “The hackers will not stop. Even all your details, name, address, friends, how you call them, they will imitate that,” he stated, underlining the importance of vigilance in digital security practices.
