National University Nazareth School Secures UAAP High School Boys’ Volleyball Championship
MANILA – National University Nazareth School (NUNS) emerged victorious in the UAAP Season 86 high school boys’ volleyball championship, overcoming University of the East in a thrilling four-set match, 20-25, 25-16, 27-25, 25-21, in Game 3 of the Finals at the FilOil EcoOil Centre on Monday.
According to Philippines News Agency, this victory holds special significance due to the challenges the team faced, particularly after their loss in Game 2. Barroga shared that the setback in the second game of the series was a pivotal moment for the team, prompting a collective effort to overcome adversity and secure the title.
NUNS had previously won the opening game of the series (39-37, 26-24, 22-25, 25-22), but UE made a strong comeback in Game 2 (18-25, 17-25, 27-25, 26-24, 15-11) to level the series. Barroga noted the importance of staying focused and not letting emotions get the best of them, a strategy that ultimately paid off in the decisive third game.
Key performances from Season Best Middle Blocker Miguel Egger, Matthew Abut, and Kart Lascuña in the fourth set helped NUNS maintain their momentum and clinch the championship. Dave Lardizabal played a crucial role in the third set, scoring three important points when the Bullpups faced a critical moment trailing at 23-24.
Finals MVP Jeffe Gallego Jr., who is among eight players graduating this year, expressed his gratitude towards Coach Barroga for his unwavering support and leadership throughout the season. Gallego emphasized the team’s collective resolve, inspired by their coach’s perseverance, as a key factor in their championship win.
