Narcotics Bureau Dismantles Drug Trafficking Syndicate in ‘Operasi Lucky Ape’
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN — In a decisive crackdown on drug trafficking, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) of Brunei has apprehended 14 individuals, including locals, permanent residents, and foreigners, aged between 18 to 61. The arrests were part of ‘Operasi Lucky Ape’, conducted on January 25th and 26th, 2024, targeting a Syabu (methamphetamine) smuggling and trafficking network operating in Kampung Menunggol, Pulau Berambang, and Kampung Bolkiah.
According to Radio Television Brunei, the operation aimed at dismantling a syndicate led by a 36-year-old local, who was identified as the mastermind utilizing youths as runners for drug trafficking activities. This individual was found collaborating with a previously arrested 42-year-old local drug trafficker. The operation led to the seizure of 737.82 grams of Syabu and drug paraphernalia from an 18-year-old suspect, with the drugs valued at over $140,000—enough to supply around 7,300 drug abusers.
The suspects are being investigated under Section 3A of the Misuse of Drugs Act, Chapter 27, for possession of controlled drugs with intent to traffic. Given the quantity of drugs involved, convictions could result in the death penalty. Additionally, assets believed to be proceeds from drug trafficking, including a vehicle and cash totaling 5,214 Brunei Dollars, 477 Singapore Dollars, and 110 Malaysian Ringgit, were confiscated and are under investigation under Section 3 of the Criminal Asset Recovery Order 2012.
The NCB has issued a reminder to the youth, urging them not to be enticed by the false promises of drug traffickers offering lucrative rewards for illegal activities.
