The main role and responsibility of mosque officers and Takmir committee is to ensure that mosques, suraus as well as religious halls are always supervised to avoid any religious teachings and practices that are not in line with the country’s practices. The country does not want to create confusion among the society due to contradicting views on religious practices and ceremonies that are usually carried out by muslims in Brunei Darussalam. According to the Minister of Religious Affairs, the public’s confusion in religious practises can bring about negative matters. Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman stated the matter in a keynote address at the Mosque Takmir Committee Member Convention that was held in conjunction with the New Hijrah Year Celebration yesterday morning at University Brunei Darussalam.

Yang Berhormat said when the contradicting views are followed by ‘Ta’assub’ or fanaticism towards a person or a congregation, it can destroy solidarity. Therefore, the country has laws for offences that question the Islamic practises and ceremonies, as an addition to the country’s existing regulations on offences of ridiculing Islam and others, either in written or verbal methods. The fine for such offence is not more than 12 thousand dollars, imprisonment of not more than 3 years or both.

The ceremony coincided with the presentation of certificates to those who presented their working papers from MABIMS member states namely Brunei Darussalam; Republic of Indonesia; Republic of Singapore and Malaysia. 800 people attended the convention comprising mosque officers, takmir committee members and Heads of Mosque Youths. The 2-day convention carries the theme Towards Empowering Excellence in Mosque Takmir Committee Members, which aims to raise the quality and credibility of mosque takmir committees in managing the mosque apart from improving the participant’s understanding on their respective roles and responsibilities.
