Mindanao Leaders Reject Secession, Advocate for Unity in the Philippines

MAGUINDANAO DEL SUR — Leaders from the provinces of Maguindanao del Sur and Sultan Kudarat have voiced their strong opposition to the idea of Mindanao seceding from the Philippines, emphasizing their commitment to national unity and the constitutional rights of their citizens. These statements come amid discussions on the regional autonomy and the integrity of the Philippine archipelago.

According to Philippines News Agency, Governor Bai Mariam Sangki Mangudadatu of Maguindanao del Sur articulated that the notion of Mindanao seceding would infringe upon the constitutional rights of the people and undermine efforts to foster a stronger, more unified Philippines. She highlighted that separation would not solve the region’s challenges but would instead lead to instability, underdevelopment, and discord. Governor Mangudadatu asserted that Mindanao’s diversity, progress, and peace are reflections of its strength within a united country.

Echoing this sentiment, Sultan Kudarat’s Governor Datu Pax Ali Mangudadatu also stood against the secession of Mindanao. He argued that addressing Mindanao’s issues does not necessitate a separation from the Philippines, pointing out that such a move would disrupt the economic productivity and interconnectedness of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Governor Ali Mangudadatu emphasized the importance of democracy, inclusivity, and justice, advocating for unity and a collective pursuit of stability and progress.

Both leaders reinforced the idea that the peace, heritage, and progress achieved in Mindanao are due to a unified approach to governance and the comprehensive peace process that has led to the termination of armed conflicts in the region. They stressed that dialogue, understanding, and reconciliation have been key to Mindanao’s achievements, which could be undermined by divisive agendas.

The firm stance of the governors against the secessionist movements underlines their belief in the constitutionally granted rights and political choices available to the people of Mindanao. They underscored that democracy in the Philippines allows for individual liberties within a framework of collective responsibility to uphold the laws of the land, advocating for a path forward that keeps the Philippines united and undivided.
