Manila, Philippines – In a heartfelt message to the nation, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. called on Filipinos to reflect on their purpose and remember the courage exhibited by saints and the departed as the country observes All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day.
According to Philippines News Agency, the devotion of saints and the legacies of the departed should serve as a source of empowerment for Filipinos to live boldly in accordance with Christian values, despite the challenges of the world. He underscored the significance of these holy days in fostering reflection, remembrance, and a sense of unity among Filipinos.
The President also highlighted the role of centuries-old traditions in shaping Filipino culture, emphasizing faith and family as central components. He expressed hope that the observance of these holidays would bring families together and inspire Filipinos to lead virtuous lives while keeping in mind the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ.
Celebrated on November 1, All Saints' Day honors saints, martyrs, and holy individuals, both known and unknown. All Souls' Day, observed on November 2, is dedicated to remembering departed loved ones and souls in purgatory.
In light of the observance, the Philippine National Police (PNP) is maintaining a full alert status following the recently-concluded Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE). PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo revealed that a total of 27,161 police personnel have been deployed to various memorial parks, cemeteries, and columbaria across the nation to ensure peace, order, and safety.
PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. reminded the public to stay vigilant, exercise caution in crowded areas, and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. He emphasized the shared responsibility of ensuring safety during the Undas observance.
As of 10 a.m. Wednesday, the PNP Monitoring Center reported that over 828,000 visitors have flocked to cemeteries nationwide. Region 1 (Ilocos) saw the highest number of visitors, followed by the National Capital Region and Central Luzon.
Meanwhile, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. called for a solemn observance of the Undas holidays, urging the public to follow established rules and guidelines while visiting cemeteries. He commended the local government units of Manila and Caloocan City, the PNP, and the Bureau of Fire Protection for their preparation and support in ensuring a peaceful observance.
