Manila Cathedral Opens Crypt for Prayers for Former Archbishops During All Saints’ and Souls’ Days

Manila — The Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, commonly referred to as Manila Cathedral, is inviting the public to offer prayers for former archbishops of Manila.

According to Philippines News Agency, the crypt will be opened to the public as part of the observance of All Saints’ Day (Nov. 1) and All Souls’ Day (Nov. 2).

The cathedral crypt, located beneath the church complex and accessible by a stairway to the right of the altar, serves as the burial place for former Manila archbishops Michael J. O’Doherty, Gabriel M. Reyes, Cardinal Rufino J. Santos, and Cardinal Jaime L. Sin. The cathedral encouraged the public to visit and pray at the tomb of these former archbishops, in addition to offering prayers for their departed loved ones.

Moreover, the cathedral’s Blessed Souls Chapel will also remain open for visitors during the observance of All Saints’ and Souls’ Days. “The Blessed Souls Chapel is open as well for silent prayer for the repose of our departed relatives,” the cathedral stated. Prayers and Masses for the departed will be offered from November 1 to November 9, 2023.

Traditionally, Filipinos visit cemeteries and memorial parks on November 1 and 2 to pay respects to departed family members. Those unable to visit cemeteries often go to the chapel to light candles and offer prayers and Masses for their late loved ones.
