LTFRB Thanks President Marcos for Supporting Public Transport Modernization Amid Calls for Suspension
MANILA — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) expressed appreciation on Wednesday for President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s continued support of the Public Transport Modernization Program (PTMP), despite recent proposals to suspend the initiative. This program aims to enhance the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of the nation’s public transport system.
According to Philippines News Agency, the president’s backing underscores the critical need to modernize transportation infrastructure to meet the evolving demands of commuters and to ensure a more reliable and environmentally friendly public transportation network. “I extend my utmost gratitude to [Marcos] for his unwavering support to the PTMP and the LTFRB,” Guadiz stated, praising Marcos’ leadership and vision.
President Marcos, in a recent interview, firmly rejected the suspension of the PTMP, which has been a point of contention. He highlighted that around 80 percent of public utility vehicle (PUV) operators have embraced the program, pushing back against claims that the modernization effort was rushed. “The modernization has been postponed seven times and those that have been objecting or have been crying out and asking for suspension are in the minority,” Marcos explained.
This statement comes in the wake of Senate Resolution No. 1096, which called for a temporary halt to the PTMP due to implementation concerns and highlighted protests from drivers and PUV operators not participating in the program. Despite these challenges, support remains strong among many transport stakeholders.
In Cebu City, leaders of modern transportation initiatives also voiced their support for the president’s decision. Ellen Maghanoy, chair of the Federation of Cebu Transport Cooperatives, expressed gratitude and renewed commitment to improving public transport services. “With your support of the PUV Modernization Program, we will strive to do better,” Maghanoy told the Philippine News Agency. She outlined future plans to implement coordinated dispatching and an automatic fare collection system to enhance commuter convenience and reduce competition among modern jeepney units.
