League of Cities in the Philippines Advocates for Unity in Charter Change Debate

CEBU CITY, Philippines — The League of Cities of the Philippines, representing 149 city mayors nationwide, has issued a call for unity amid ongoing debates over constitutional reform, emphasizing the need for collaboration to continue the country’s path toward progress and peace.

According to Philippines News Agency, the national president of the League, the association is aligning with the Department of the Interior and Local Government’s appeal for national unity to sustain achievements in peace, progress, and prosperity. In a statement released on Monday, Mayor Rama highlighted the importance of collective action and unity, underpinned by a shared concern for the welfare of Filipinos. He emphasized the league’s commitment to the Constitution and the importance of upholding its principles.

Rama also stressed the value of compassion, decency, respect, and care in navigating differences of opinion on development paths, suggesting that these values should guide public service. He called on fellow public servants to prioritize selfless service as a cornerstone of their duty to the public.

The mayor’s remarks came against the backdrop of discussions on proposals to amend or replace the 1987 Constitution. During a flag-raising ceremony at Cebu City Hall, Rama expressed his support for constitutional change, specifying a preference for a Constitutional Convention as the mechanism for such amendments.

Rama’s appeal for unity and his stance on constitutional reform reflect a broader call for overcoming partisanship and focusing on the nation’s collective interest, particularly at a time when discussions on charter change are gaining momentum.
