La Salle and Ateneo Secure Victories in UAAP Season 86 Men’s Volleyball Opener
PASAY CITY – The UAAP Season 86 men’s volleyball tournament kicked off with De La Salle University and Ateneo de Manila University notching wins against their respective opponents at the Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday.
According to Philippines News Agency, De La Salle University began their campaign with a straight-set victory over Adamson University, finishing the match with scores of 25-22, 25-23, 26-24. Noel Michael Kampton and John Mark Ronquillo led the Green Spikers with significant contributions, effectively countering the Soaring Falcons’ attempts to rally in the third set. Kampton delivered a game-high 19 points, including 15 attacks, two blocks, and two aces, alongside seven receptions and digs. Ronquillo added 16 points through hits, a block, and an ace. Supporting their efforts, Diogenes Poquita contributed with 15 excellent sets, and Menard Guerrero posted 13 digs and receptions.
In a parallel match, Ateneo emerged victorious against the University of the East with a four-set win, scores being 25-16, 22-25, 25-15, 25-14. The victory marked a positive start for both teams, setting a competitive tone for the season.
Jose Roque, the debuting head coach for La Salle, expressed confidence in his team’s performance and resilience. He highlighted the importance of communication and trust among team members, which played a pivotal role in securing their win. Despite Adamson seizing a late lead in the third set, La Salle’s strategic plays, including a crucial block by Vince Gerard Maglinao and consecutive points from Kampton, ensured their victory.
La Salle aims to maintain their winning momentum as they face Far Eastern University in their next match at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, seeking a 2-0 record.
Adamson, despite the setback, saw commendable performances from Joel Menor, Marc Kenneth Paulino, and John Eugenio Gay, who scored 12, 11, and 10 points, respectively. The team is set to regroup and aim for a win in their upcoming game against the University of the Philippines at the Pasay arena.
