Justice Secretary Remulla Urges Protesters to Maintain Peace During Demonstrations

MANILA — Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla called for peaceful conduct during protests, emphasizing respect for the rights of others following an incident where a security guard was injured by demonstrators at the Department of Justice (DOJ) headquarters.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Justice Secretary highlighted the state’s commitment to respecting the public’s right to assemble and petition but stressed that such rights must be exercised without infringing on the rights of others. This reminder comes in the wake of an altercation at the DOJ main office in Ermita, Manila, where a security guard suffered a head injury after being attacked by participants of a rally led by Bayan Timog Katagalugan and other groups.

The groups were protesting the government’s handling of the case involving Elizabeth Camoral, a member of Bayan Laguna, arrested during last year’s ‘Bloody Sunday’ incident. In response to the violence, Remulla affirmed the DOJ’s support for the injured security guard and vowed to pursue justice for him and his family. Additionally, DOJ spokesperson Jose Dominic Clavano IV called on protesters to eschew anger and violence in their demonstrations, urging a more peaceful and reasoned approach to expressing dissent.
