Increased Fire Station Coverage Across Philippine LGUs Enhances Emergency Response
Manila – The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) announced a significant improvement in fire emergency preparedness across the Philippines, with close to 1,500 local government units (LGUs) now equipped with fire stations and fire trucks. In a news release on Saturday, Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos highlighted that as of September, 1,484 cities and municipalities have operational fire stations, enhancing their capability to respond to fire incidents and other emergencies.
According to Philippines News Agency, This development leaves 150 LGUs without fire trucks and fire stations, of which six have newly constructed buildings awaiting operationalization, 16 are undergoing construction, and 128 are prioritized for future construction. Abalos emphasized the collaboration with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to ensure all towns and cities are equipped to combat fires and respond promptly to various emergencies. The BFP has significantly expanded its fleet, now boasting 2,912 firetruck units with varying water-carrying capacities. Since 2022, 465 new 1,000-gallon trucks have been added through bulk procurement, significantly improving response capabilities.
This enhancement in fire response infrastructure aims to reduce the firefighters’ response time, which is crucial in densely populated areas like Metro Manila, where traffic congestion often delays emergency services. The advancements align with the objectives of Republic Act 11589 or the BFP Modernization Act of 2021, which mandates the BFP, in coordination with the DILG, to upgrade its facilities and equipment for fire prevention, suppression, investigation, and emergency medical and rescue services. The act also expands the BFP’s role in fire management in economic zones, disaster risk response, and emergency management, marking a comprehensive approach to public safety and emergency preparedness.
