Halal Status of Canned Meat Products

The halal issue of canned meat such as beef and chicken was raised by Yang Berhormat Pengiran Haji Isa bin Pengiran Haji Aliuddin. It prompted replies from the Minister of Religious Affairs as well as Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doktor Awang Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar, Minister of Health and the Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism.

The Minister of Religious Affairs said if the issue concerns food health, the relevant party would discuss it with the Syari'ah Department Food Control Division. The Minister of Health added that the Scientific Department would conduct an analysis if the product contained 'pork' or other derivatives or not before giving Halal Certification. There are several processes to determine the Halal status of such canned products. Meanwhile, the Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism said Brunei Darussalam Food Authority is one of the two agencies responsible for processed meat products. Normally, they will require a Health Certificate from the exporters.
