Former President Duterte Backs Marcos Jr.’s Economic Charter Change Proposals

MANILA – Former President Rodrigo Duterte has pledged unequivocal support for President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s initiative to amend the economic provisions of the Philippine Constitution. During a press briefing late Tuesday, Duterte urged Filipinos to back the Charter change (Cha-cha) if it serves the national interest and improves citizens’ livelihoods.

According to Philippines News Agency, the push for amending the 1987 Constitution should focus exclusively on its economic aspects and coincide with the 2025 midterm elections to conserve public funds and enhance the credibility of the process. He stressed the importance of cooperation in any efforts to amend the Constitution, suggesting that any changes be designed to benefit the populace. When questioned about his level of support for these specific and limited constitutional amendments, Duterte did not hesitate to affirm his “100 percent” backing.

President Marcos has previously voiced his support for revising the 1987 Constitution but insisted that such amendments should strictly pertain to economic issues. Duterte echoed this sentiment, advocating for periodic constitutional revisions driven solely by the aim to promote governmental and national welfare. He expressed curiosity about the economic provisions yet to be addressed, emphasizing the necessity of sticking to economic adjustments.

Duterte also reiterated his concerns over potential constitutional revisions aimed at extending the terms of current officeholders. He underscored that any changes should be progressive and must not serve the interests of those in power, explicitly stating that they should not benefit the next president either.
