2 foreign fishing vessels and crew were detained by the Royal Brunei Navy during a maritime patrol conducted at two separate locations on the waters of Brunei Darussalam. The two vessels were handed over to the Marine Police, Royal Brunei Police Force for further action. The investigation carried out found 27 Vietnamese men aged between 15 and 51 years were on the vessel.
According to Police Superintendent Haji Azree bin Haji Abd Manaf/Munap, Commanding Officer of Marine Police, inspections conducted on the vessels found fishing equipment and also fish believed to have been caught from Brunei Darussalam waters. If found guilty, under Section 17 bracket 1, Fisheries Order 2009, the Ship Sector will be fined not more than one hundred dollars or five years imprisonment or both, while the crew will be fined not more than two thousand five hundred dollars or one year imprisonment or both. The case is still under investigation. The Royal Brunei Police Force urges the public to provide any information pertaining to criminal activities on the waters of Brunei Darussalam.
