A captain of a foreign fishing vessel will face a fine of 100,000 dollars or 5 years imprisonment if found guilty for an offence under the Fisheries Order 2009. The captain and 5 other crew on board, who are all Vietnamese, as well as the vessel were detained by the Royal Brunei Navy at the Brunei waters last Tuesday. The case was handed over to the Royal Brunei Police Force for further investigation. Assistant Superintendent of Police Kasnol bin Haji Muhammad Kincho, Marine Police Senior Operations Officer said that upon investigation, a number of fishing equipment were discovered, along with catches that are believed from Brunei Darussalam waters.
If found guilty under Section 17(1) of the Fisheries Order 2009, the vessel’s captain will be fined not more than one hundred thousand dollars or 5 years imprisonment or both. Meanwhile the crew will be fined not more than 2 thousand 500 dollars or one year imprisonment or both.
