Post: First Meeting of the Legislative Council to Outline National Development Direction

Bandar seri begawan: The First Meeting of the 22nd Legislative Council Session for 1447 Hijrah / 2026 is set to commence on Thursday, 22nd Ramadhan 1447 Hijrah, corresponding to 12th March 2026. His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, will deliver a titah as the focal point of the Official Opening Ceremony. Prior to the ceremony, the Legislative Council will review and endorse the Journal (Meeting Minutes) of the 21st Legislative Council Session held in 2025. The session will then be adjourned to facilitate the Official Opening Ceremony of the First Meeting of the 22nd Legislative Council Session.

According to Radio Television Brunei, this year's Legislative Council Session will address the nation's development direction through inquiries and deliberations, centering on the Supply Bill (2026) for the Financial Year 2026/2027, and the Development Budget, which is anticipated to be fully approved and gazetted for implementation as of 1st April 2026. The session will be chaired by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib, Speaker of the Legislative Council, with assistance from Datin Paduka Dr. Dayang Hajah Huraini binti Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Jaya Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hurairah, Clerk to the Privy Council, Secretary to the Cabinet Ministers Council, and Clerk to the Legislative Council.

The Legislative Council functions as the highest legal and discussion entity in the country, comprising Ex-Officio Members, Titled Persons, Persons Who Have Achieved Distinction, and District Representatives. Through respectful deliberations and a constructive discussion atmosphere, the Council serves as a platform to harmonize the perspectives of the people and government in considering significant national policies aimed at supporting sustainable economic growth, improving the people's well-being via inclusive social policies, and ensuring the nation's continued peace under the blessings of Allah Subhanahu Wata'ala.

The Legislative Council session will be open to the public wishing to witness the deliberations at Dewan Persidangan, starting a day after the Official Opening Ceremony. English translation services are available upon application 24 hours prior to attendance.

Educational institutions are encouraged to introduce students to the Legislative Council, the national legislative process, and discussions at Dewan Persidangan. Visit applications should be submitted via an official letter to the Legislative Council Secretariat at least five days prior to the intended visit date.

Recordings of daily sessions will be broadcasted on RTB Perdana and RTB Sukmaindera at 9 PM for the morning session and 11 PM for the afternoon session. Official documents such as Hansard, Minute of Meetings, and Order of the Day can be accessed at 'councils.gov.bn'. The latest information and developments will also be shared on the official Instagram, '@legcobrunei'.

Visitors and attendees of the LegCo session are advised to adhere to established rules and guidelines, including dress code requirements and procedures for entering the Dewan Persidangan, to ensure a smooth session. This includes adhering to a smart and modest dress code as stated in regulations, and maintaining mobile phones on silent, with photography or videography prohibited without permission.
